Reader’s Question:

What would happen to me  if I were caught driving without insurance? Will  California require me to carry SR22 car insurance?

Sam

San Francisco, CA

What else would happen to you? You should expect to pay heavy fines, and you would pose as a risk for endangering yourself and other drivers. It is considered as violation of California law since the state mandates every driver to carry minimum liability car insurance.

In most cases, the penalty for driving without insurance vary from state to state. Some states impose steep fines, some do not. You might also expect them to hold and impound  your vehicle, your license tag seized, and your drivers license suspended. Also, it is definite that most states will require you to carry SR22 insurance until you are able to show them financial responsibility. Usually, they will require you to carry this insurance for a period of not less than 3 years. It is also needed in order to reinstate your license.

Worse come to worst if you were caught driving without insurance and have been involved in an accident. You could face jail time and would also be exposing yourself to both legal and financial constraints–the burden of paying damages and injuries out of your own pocket. To avoid the hassle of going through this, it would be wise to get yourself insured.
