Hello there buddy! That’s a good question to ask. If you want to drive around Alabama legally, I suggest you hook up with an insurance agent and get yourself car insurance coverage for the following amounts: 1) bodily injury liability insurance coverage of $20,000 for each person up to a maximum of $40,000 for every accident and, 2) a property damage liability coverage of $10,000.

Alabama uses the tort system for vehicular accidents, which simply means the party found to be at fault in an accident has to file the claim with his car insurance company and will be liable for any costs due to the accident. Of course, these are just the minimum auto insurance required and you are more than welcome to get coverage for more than these amounts.

Personally, I would suggest that you also shell out some bucks for some personal injury protection and uninsured or underinsured motorist insurance, as well. I’m sure that with extra car insurance coverage like this, you get more peace of mind. The extra cash you shell out will pay off in the event that you do get into an accident.

If you haven’t purchased a car yet, I suggest checking out different vehicles safety ratings. Some cars get cheaper auto insurance than others.

I would suggest you verify that any car you drive is insured. Your sister’s car is required to insure it. Your SR22 policy would be secondary to that car insurance. You may still get in trouble for driving that car if there is no car insurance on it.

If you borrow a car from a your sister and got involved in an accident in that car, your sister’s car insurance would kick in first. However if, for instance, the accident was your fault and the damage to the other driver’s property exceeded the liability limits on your sister’s car insurance policy, your SR22 insurance policy would cover the excess (up to policy limits).

If you have been ordered that you are required to carry an SR-22 or financial responsibility certificate in Vermont, you will likely have to continue to maintain it even if you have insurance coverages beyond what it requires of you. The Vermont DMV states that an individuals that are ordered to file a SR22 certificate must carry it and have it on file with the department of motor vehicles for a minimum of three years without any lapses.

If you have not violated any VT laws and have not been mandated to acquire an SR-22 than your full coverage, which should include the minimum liability limits plus comprehensive and collision coverage, that should be enough to cover your vehicle. The minimum liability limits for Vermont are bodily injury $25,000 for one person up to $50,000 per accident and $10,000 for property damage in one accident.
