Reader’s Question:

What age required for you to be able to apply for non owners insurance?

John

Evansville, IN

Insurance providers differ on their guidelines for non-owners insurance so some might have age restrictions while other carriers will not. You need to comparison shop to find the provider that is right for your needs.

If you are young teenager and living at home with parents or relatives it is usually cheaper and easier to have you put onto their current car insurance policy. If that is not feasible and if you do not own a vehicle but are licensed and occasionally operate a vehicle, non owners is a type of policy that could work for you. It is essential to ask when shopping for this car insurance, if you will be covered for cars owned by members of the same household because some insurance companies do not allow this.

Reader’s Question:

I was driving my sister’s car that has no insurance and someone hit the car that I was driving, will my SR22 cover the damage?

Jim

Chicago, IL

I would suggest you verify that any car you drive is insured. Your sister’s car is required to insure it. Your SR22 policy would be secondary to that car insurance. You may still get in trouble for driving that car if there is no car insurance on it.

If you borrow a car from a your sister and got involved in an accident in that car, your sister’s car insurance would kick in first. However if, for instance, the accident was your fault and the damage to the other driver’s property exceeded the liability limits on your sister’s car insurance policy, your SR22 insurance policy would cover the excess (up to policy limits).

Reader’s Question:

Can I use a “Non-Owner” SR22 insurance policy if I own a car and already have insurance?

Linda

Thank you asking Linda.

Yes.

One common option with an SR22 requirement is to buy a “non-owner”, or “named-operator” policy. This insurance policy is issued to supplement your existing insurance policy, and meets the state’s minimum liability insurance requirements for license release. With sr22 there is no communication with your existing insurance provider, and the policy is issued faster and discreetly. Once your required time is completed and satisfied, you can cancel or terminate the SR22 policy and continue your existing insurance uninterrupted. A “non-owner” SR22 policy is usually the least expensive alternative, and by far the most popular product.

Goodluck!
